Welcome to the web site for Behind The View. Peak District Book Of The Year - 2006

The book was created by the people of Cressbrook and produced by Carole Perks, Chris Gilbert and Hillary Stephens over a two and a half year period between 2003 and 2005. The funds for the project were provided through a grant from the Local Heritage Initiative (LHI)

Behind The View charts the history of this important mill village from the Enclosures Act of 1762 through to the present day and describes how Sir Richard Arkwright and a succession of leading industrialists developed the site until the mill's inevitable decline and eventual closure in the 1960s.
The book also describes the development of the village itself and charts its life down the ages until the present day.

Behind The View is not simply a coffee table book, although containing over 300 pictures and illustrations does make it beautiful simply to browse through. It also contains a significant amount of important primary research, cataloguing a previously undocumented period in the villages history between 1835 and 1920, during which the major part of the model village was built by Henry McConnel.

It also contains valuable and enlightening oral history testimonies from older Cressbrook residents, past and present. Together these studies offer a complete, highly illuminating and at times breathtakingly poignant view of life in an industrial village during periods of sustained and significant change.
